2017 - 2018 STUDENTS: Welcome to the 6th grade here at SCMS. SCMS is a very challenging and fulfilling school. The students are challenged in every class. The role of the teacher is to help guide them into the understanding of the subject. At SCMS, we pride ourselves on being a top school in CMS and we use many different techniques to help the student. You will be studying two of the most exciting subjects possible: social studies and science. I have been teaching for 20 years and have watched as thousands of students have come to understand and value the material we cover in class. We in the sixth grade offer many alternative avenues for understanding.
For instance, we offer tutoring. I will offer tutoring in the mornings on Thursdays for Science / S.S. @ 7:30.
The student must sign up beforehand to allow me to make my schedule for the day. For tutoring, the student also needs to have questions or material to go over. Please do not sign up for tutoring and come into my class room to catch up on missing homework. This rule allows me to aid other students in making up assessments and to allow me to guide other students through misunderstood work.
For the most part, I follow CMS guidelines on late work and retakes of tests. I am very understanding of parental and student concerns. In order to be successful throughout this year, I believe communication is the key. So if you have a concern, please contact me through the school's email link to send me a message. As well, I will try to reply to every concern within 24 hours.
I have been a teacher for 20 years in all the grades in middle school. First in Baltimore County and then here in Charlotte. I find teaching needs high energy and enthusiasm. Also, I have lived in many of the places that we will learn about in s.s. and have witnessed first- hand the science that we will explore.
I believe in having fun learning together in a structured environment. In a large class, all the students work and learn together. Using this method, all students are engaged and each helps their neighbor. However, all the students must fulfill their obligations to make the class a worthwhile place to engage their intellect.
Again, when a child is having difficulties or a parent wishes to contact me, please go to the SCMS home page, go to the staff tab locate my name and send me a message. As soon as I get the message (sometimes our servers are down or messages get rerouted) I will answer within 24 hours.
I look forward to meeting all the parents as we begin the school year.
Let's get started,
